Important Grooming Tools
Even if you plan to send your dog to the groomer regularly you will still need to have some basic grooming tools at home to use between appointments.
You will want to brush your dog daily or at least a few times a week.
First of all you will need a good slicker brush and comb.
We use a large Chris Christensen Big G slicker brush but any good quality slicker should do the trick! A metal tooth comb is important to check for tangles and mattes as well!
This video from Doodle doods shows how to line brush correctly by getting right down to the base of the coat.

Other tools you can use at home between grooming appointments are
- Detangler (cowboy magic is a great one!)
- Nail Clippers or a nail grinder
- A "flea" comb to remove eye goobies
- Shampoo and Conditioner (We use Tropiclean)
- a Tooth Brush and Tooth paste
- A good quality ear wash (We use Pro Otic Ear cleansing/ drying solution from our Veterinarian office)
- A licking mat is very handy to use as a distraction
Although I do groom my own dogs at home I am not a professional dog groomer and I am only sharing from my personal experience. I am always happy to share what has worked for me and my dogs but your greatest source of knowledge will be from your groomer!
A great groomer will be happy to teach you how to care for your dog's coat between appointments and will take the time to make sure you know how to use the tools that they use.
